Policies
These policies are designed to ensure that the library remains a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for all members of the community. By using the library, patrons agree to abide by the following guidelines.
Proper Behavior in the Library
The library is a shared community space. Patrons are expected to treat staff, other visitors, and materials with respect.
Quiet conversation is permitted, but disruptive or loud behavior is not allowed.
Food and drink are permitted only in designated areas. Covered beverages are acceptable in most public spaces unless otherwise posted.
The use of alcohol, tobacco, vaping, or illegal substances is prohibited.
Harassment, threats, or any form of discrimination will not be tolerated.
Cell phone use should be respectful; phone calls should be taken outside or in designated areas.
Library property, equipment, and furnishings must be used appropriately and with care.
Obtaining a Library Card
Library cards are available free of charge to residents of [service area]. Proof of address and valid photo identification are required.
Non-residents may obtain a card for an annual fee as determined by the library board.
Children under age 14 must have a parent or legal guardian present to register for a card.
Cardholders are responsible for all materials borrowed on their account, including items checked out by authorized family members.
Lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately; patrons are responsible for all materials borrowed until the loss is reported.
Parental Oversight of Children
Parents and guardians are responsible for the behavior, safety, and supervision of their children while in the library.
Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or responsible caregiver.
The library staff cannot act in loco parentis (in the place of parents).
Parents are encouraged to guide their children’s selection of reading and viewing materials, as the library provides access to a wide range of perspectives and content.
Unattended minors may be asked to contact a parent or guardian if disruptive or unsafe behavior occurs.
Responsibility for Lost or Damaged Materials
Borrowers are responsible for returning library materials by their due date and in good condition.
Fees may be charged for overdue items as determined by library policy.
Lost or irreparably damaged items must be paid for at the current replacement cost, as determined by the library.
Refunds may be issued if a lost item is found and returned within 30 days of payment, provided the item is still in usable condition.
Patrons with excessive unpaid fines or lost items may have borrowing privileges suspended until accounts are resolved.
Computer and Internet Use
Public computers and Wi-Fi are available for educational, informational, and recreational purposes.
Users must comply with local, state, and federal laws while using library technology.
Viewing obscene or illegal content is strictly prohibited.
Time limits may apply during periods of high demand.
Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their child’s internet use.
Meeting Rooms and Community Spaces
Library meeting rooms are available for community use when not reserved for library programs.
Reservations must be made in advance and comply with library policies.
Commercial, political campaign, or purely social events may be restricted at the discretion of the library board.
Groups using library facilities are responsible for setup, cleanup, and any damages incurred.
Donations and Gifts
The library welcomes donations of books, media, or other materials but reserves the right to accept, decline, or dispose of items as appropriate.
Monetary gifts are gratefully accepted and will be used in accordance with library needs and priorities.
Donors may not impose restrictions on the use of gifts unless specifically agreed upon by the library board.
Enforcement of Policies
Library staff are authorized to enforce policies courteously and fairly.
Patrons who fail to comply may be asked to leave the premises.
Repeated or serious violations may result in suspension of library privileges or, if necessary, involvement of law enforcement.
Commitment to Inclusion
The library is committed to serving all members of the community regardless of age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or socioeconomic status.
We strive to create an environment where everyone feels safe, welcome, and respected.
